Women Encouraged to Talk About the Menopause

Oct 18, 2022

Women in Jersey are being encouraged to discuss the menopause and to ask their GP for advice and support as part of World Menopause Day.

World Menopause Day is held on 18 October every year and aims to raise awareness of menopause as well as the support available to improve health and wellbeing for women in mid-life and beyond. The theme for this year’s day is Cognition and Mood.

Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Health and Community Services, Dr Fiona Nelson, said:

“It’s common for women who are going through the menopause to experience mood swings from feelings of depression, anxiety or irritability. They may also suffer from short-term memory loss or have difficulty thinking straight which many women describe as ‘brain fog’.

“Fluctuating hormone levels can cause these changes to mood and cognition. The menopause is a natural biological process, but it comes with a variety of physical and emotional symptoms which can have a negative impact on your mental health.

“If you are concerned about how you are feeling please don’t hesitate to seek help. In the first instance speak to your GP who can if necessary direct you to specialist help in the Gynaecology Department.”
