Government Issue Advise on Coronavirus

Feb 04, 2020

The Government of Jersey is reminding Islanders of the importance of good hand hygiene to help combat not only Coronavirus but many other winter bugs.

While there are no cases of Coronavirus in Jersey, and only two confirmed cases in the UK, there are currently more than 12000 confirmed cases across the world, with the majority in China. These numbers are continuing to grow.

Consultant Microbiologist for Health and Community Services and Deputy Medical Office of Health, Dr Ivan Muscat, said: “The best way to minimise the spread of germs is to keep hands clean, use tissues and then immediately dispose of them, and ensure desks and touch-points like handles and light switches are clean.”

Catch it, bin it, kill it

  • Carry tissues with you and use them when you cough or sneeze
  • Bin the tissue, and to kill the germs, wash your hands with soap and water or use a sanitizer gel
  • Wash your hands with soap and water, or alcohol hand sanitizer, regularly
  • Keep horizontal and touch surfaces clean using cleaning materials that are safe and compatible with the surfaces

Arriving home from China

  • those who have returned from mainland China should self-isolate for 14 days after their return to Jersey, whether or not they have symptoms of Coronavirus
  • those who have been in mainland China and have symptoms should self-isolate and call their GP
