Cycle Shelter Pilot Scheme

Jun 21, 2021

Three new cycle shelters are being added in St Helier as part of a four-month pilot scheme to encourage Islanders to cycle in and out of town.

The pilot scheme is scheduled to run from the end of June for four months, with a consultation running at the same time to gain Islanders' feedback and monitor success.

The covered cycle shelters will be placed at: Les Jardins de la Mer carpark near the cycle track, the Esplanade next to the Finance Centre offices, and next to Gloucester Street traffic lights. If the pilot is successful, these shelters will become permanent, and a second tranche of cycle shelters will follow.

Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said: "The pilot scheme is part of the Sustainable Transport Strong Start Delivery Plan, designed to respond to the Climate Emergency by encouraging more active travel and reducing the number of cars on the roads.

"These cycle shelters are being placed in areas where cycle stands are already busy and where better weather protection should encourage more Islanders to cycle into the town centre.

"Last year we introduced the undercover cycle parking in Sand Street which have been well used, and we are now going to add three more cycle shelters at busy locations around St Helier. I would like to encourage Islanders to share their feedback so that we are able to monitor its success and find out where more shelters would be appreciated."
