New food & beverage operator appointed for airport and harbour

Jul 13, 2020

A local company, with established links to many successful restaurants and cafés across the Island has been appointed by Ports of Jersey to provide the food and beverage service at Jersey Airport and Elizabeth Terminal.

An agreement has been reached between Ports of Jersey and JPRestaurants, which operate Jersey Crab Shack, Oyster Box and Banjo restaurants in the Island, to launch its successful and more casually themed Café Ubé brand at both locations, initially providing a hot and cold ‘grab-and-go’ service. JPRestaurants will also operate the bar at Jersey Airport once the liquor licence is in place.

The new partnership comes following the recent announcement by former operator, Casual Dining Group, that it had gone into administration as a result of the trading impact Covid-19 has had on its restaurant outlets. Ports of Jersey has been working for some weeks on contingency plans and received approaches from several local companies. While passenger volumes start to rebuild, following the restart of airline and ferry services, the initial provision will be based on the café style offering at both the airport and kiosk outlet at Elizabeth Terminal.

Confirming the appointment, Chief Commercial Officer for Ports of Jersey, Jonathan Crick, says, “We are extremely grateful for the speed and professionalism with which JPRestaurants has responded to our requirements. Its culinary reputation here in Jersey is first-class and we are delighted to welcome JPRestaurants as a new franchise partner. We look forward to working with the team in developing and enhancing our future food and beverage offering at the ports.”

In response, Dominic Jones, CEO of JPRestaurants, says, “We are thrilled to have been selected as Ports of Jersey’s hospitality partner at the airport and ferry terminal. Café Ubé will offer the option of an online ‘click-and-collect’, with fast pick-up to enable orders to be placed in advance of passengers travelling. In due course, we also plan to introduce an order-at-table service, via smartphone, at the airport bar to assist in meeting Covid-19 safety guidelines.

As passenger numbers grow, we are hopeful that working together in this way will give us the opportunity to forge a longer-term relationship with Ports of Jersey, that will enable us to extend our offer at both locations. We also hope to develop a new and sustainable offer at The Shipyard, Elizabeth Terminal to continue our 75-year history of serving islanders and visitors”.
