Permit Changes For Tourist Caravans, Campervans And Motorhomes

May 30, 2023

• Visitors staying for 31 days or fewer will no longer need a permit to bring their caravans, motorhomes, campervan and trailer tents to Jersey

• Permission will instead be granted by default if certain conditions are followed

• The change is a result of updated planning laws which come into effect next week

Most visitors bringing their caravans, motorhomes, campervans and trailer tents to Jersey will no longer need to apply for and display a Caravan-Motorhome permit.

Changes to Jersey’s planning laws - made this week by the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Jonathan Renouf - mean that those visitors staying for 31 days or fewer will be granted the permission automatically, by default.

The Minister for the Environment, Deputy Jonathan Renouf, said: “The existing system seemed overly burdensome for those valued visitors wanting to enjoy a short visit to Jersey without getting caught up in red tape.

“There are still criteria in place around the size of vehicles, where they’re stationed overnight and how long they can stay here without a permit, but we hope that removing the pre-holiday administration will make things more straight forward for the holidaymakers and for our team.”

Existing rules which stipulate that caravans, motorhomes and campervans must not be used by visitors as overnight accommodation, unless stationed at a designated campsite, remain in place. Caravans, specifically, also continue to be banned from public roads in Jersey, unless travelling from the harbour to a campsite.

Visitors intending to keep their caravan, campervan or motorhome in Jersey for longer than 31 days still need to apply for permission. Residents purchasing a campervan to bring to Jersey long-term still need to gain a letter of authority from the Infrastructure and Environment department.

The changes to the law apply from 31 May 2023. Full information about the conditions can be found on gov.je
