New Chair Approved for Jersey Appointments Commission

Oct 11, 2022

The Chief Minister has confirmed the selection of Chris Stephenson as the next Chair of the Jersey Appointments Commission.

This follows a widely advertised campaign, a recommendation from an independent panel of selectors and a notice period to the States Assembly.

Reporting to the States Employment Board, the Jersey Appointments Commission oversees appointments to roles across the States, non-executive departments and arm’s length bodies. It can also oversee key appointments bodies where the States provides significant funding.

Mr Stephenson’s appointment follows the end of the term of office of Dame Janet Paraskeva who has chaired the JAC since 2014.

He has extensive experience of overseeing senior appointments, the operation of the States of Jersey and the States Employment Board, as well senior private sector human resources roles in Jersey and the UK.

The Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore commented:

“I am pleased to confirm Chris Stephenson as the next Chair of the Jersey Appointments Commission. As an Islander, he already has a good understanding of how important it is to ensure the right appointments are made, and of the need to reform the role of the Jersey Appointments Commission.

“As Chair of the States Employment Board, I would like to see a greater emphasis on giving Islanders the opportunity to take more senior roles within the public service, and I look forward to working with him to reform the JAC and our approach to senior appointments.“

On his appointment, Chris Stephenson said:

“I am very pleased to be recommended for appointment as Chair of the Jersey Appointments Commission, and I appreciate the confidence shown in me by the Chief Minister. My professional experience and commitment to Jersey will support the public service in continuing to recruit a high quality and diverse workforce, reflective of our community.

“I look forward to working with future colleagues and stakeholders to continue the evolution of the Commission.”
