Press Release – Amendment to Single Use Plastics Proposition

Jul 08, 2021

The Jersey Chamber of Commerce Retail and Supply Committee supports the amendment from the Minister for Infrastructure to his own proposition: P.61/2021 Draft Single-Use Plastics Etc. (Restrictions) (Jersey) Law 202-.

The Amendment will extend the lead-in period from six months to twelve months, and follows consultation with Jersey Chamber of Commerce members, working alongside Jersey Business and those within the retail sector.

Paul Murphy, Chair of The Chamber Retail and Supply Group welcomed the move: “Many in retail purchase bags in large quantities and following a stop-start year of trading still hold larger than anticipated stock levels. The move to extend the introduction of this legislation will avoid destroying bags already manufactured and alleviate the burden of further costs in the short term.”

Jersey Chamber President, Jennifer Carnegie described the amendment as a sensible move: “I’m heartened that the consultation process is proving to be effective and both Chamber and Jersey Business are able to deliver constructive views to Government. This amendment will save waste and costs to the sector and we very much hope States Members will support it.”.

The proposition is due to be debated on Tuesday 20th July 2021.
