Young Islanders Sought to Represent Jersey in Delhi

Sep 09, 2019

The States Assembly (Jersey’s parliament) is looking for two Islanders aged 18-29 to represent Jersey at the 10th Commonwealth Youth Parliament in Delhi, India on 24th-28th November 2019.

The Commonwealth Youth Parliament is designed to demonstrate to young aspiring parliamentarians the role and purpose of parliaments as institutions for democracy and good governance.  It also offers attendees a valuable opportunity to network with other participants across the Commonwealth, develop their experience and leadership skills, and make a positive difference in shaping the future of Jersey.

During the Youth Parliament, participants will have the opportunity to take part in parliamentary procedures as party representatives or independents; debate controversial issues and face the Media in a ‘mock’ media conference.

Jersey participants in the Commonwealth Youth Parliament should:

  • be in the age range 18-29 years (at the time of the event)
  • be a citizen of a Commonwealth country
  • be confident and articulate enough to take an active role in the Youth Parliament
  • have an interest in the Commonwealth and political affairs

Deputy Carolyn Labey, Chair of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in Jersey, says, “If you’re interested in local politics, aged 18-29 and keen to stand out from the crowd in developing your career, we welcome your application to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Whether you aspire to become a politician or not, we are looking for two confident and articulate individuals who take pride in their Island and want to play an active role in the Youth Parliament while representing Jersey on a global stage.  The two successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop international contacts with future and current politicians from around the Commonwealth.”

If you would like to find out more information, please email the Greffier of the States, Dr. Mark Egan at [email protected].

To apply, please send an email to Mark with a copy of your CV and a cover letter of no more than 500 words, detailing your suitability for the role with reference to the above-mentioned criteria.  The deadline for applications is Thursday 19th September and interviews will take place the week commencing 23rd September.

With 60% of the Commonwealth’s population aged under 30, the CYP is a leading programme organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and responds to the needs of its young constituents.  The CPA recognises that young people have a proven capability to lead change and are a vital and valuable investment for now and the future.

The last Commonwealth Youth Parliament was held in Jersey and achieved global news coverage and saw #CYP9 trend on Twitter.
