Weekly economic indicators 09/10/2020

Statistics Jersey have today published their latest economic indicators report. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic it is important for key economic information to be available in a timely manner, to inform decision makers, businesses and members of the public. Therefore, in the short term, Statistics Jersey will be producing this report on a weekly basis.

This report provides statistics in the following areas:

  • Registered Actively Seeking Work (ASW)
  • Income Support
  • Business Disruption Loan Guarantee Scheme
  • Coronavirus Government Co-Funded Payroll Scheme (Phases One and Two)
  • Royal Court housing activity
  • public transport usage
  • monthly passenger departures from the Island

Summary

On 4 October 2020

  • the total number of people registered as ASW  was 1,580; this total is 20 lower than a week earlier and 670 higher than at the end of the comparable week a year earlier (6 October 2019) 
  • a greater number of females (900 individuals) than males (680 individuals) were registered as ASW
  • there were 6,180 active Income Support claims, 10 lower compared with 27 September 2020, and 600 more than a year earlier (30 September 2019). This latest number of claims provided support for:
    • 7,870 adults 
    • 3,170 children
  • under Phase Two of the Government Co-Funded Payroll Scheme almost £78.5 million had been paid out for a total 13,600 claims  from April, May, June, July and August 2020
  • under Phase Three of the Government Co-Funded Payroll Scheme over £800,000 had been paid out for a total 300 claims from September 2020
  • it should be noted that claims could only be made during part of the week, after 1 October
  • public transport usage decreased (by 5%) compared with the previous week

On 2 October 2020

  • around 55 loans had been approved under the Business Disruption Loan Guarantee Scheme; the total amount of loans approved was £3,226,700, of which £3,076,700 had been drawn down
  • there were 27 residential properties transacted through the Royal Court, 24 of which were eligible to be included in the Jersey House Price Index
