Discover Jersey's Unique History

Jan 24, 2020

Jersey Library will be hosting the Island’s fourth Local History Fayre on Friday and Saturday, 24-25 January, from 10.00am – 4.00pm.

Both Islanders and visitors can learn more about Jersey’s fascinating history from specialists on a range of subjects, from naval history to the Island’s history of activism.

Experts from Jersey’s local history societies and organisations will be giving free talks at the Library, and Islanders will have the opportunity to meet and discuss local history on a one-to-one basis.

Chief Librarian, Edward Jewell, said: “We’re pleased to once again be giving Islanders the opportunity to learn more about Jersey’s heritage. The fact that we’re able to offer talks on such a breadth of subjects is testament to just how rich the Island’s history is.”

Ian Ronayne, who will be giving a talk on WWII naval losses in the Channel, said: “We’re mindful of the impact that WWII had on civilian life in Jersey, but it’s easy to overlook that the Channel was a battleground throughout the war. I’m looking forward to re-telling the tragic story of a British naval disaster and its enduring impact on our Island.”

Vic Tanner Davy, who will be giving a talk on ‘Our Queer Channel Islands’ said: “Often, we are led to believe that certain issues only arrived on Jersey’s shores recently. I hope my talk will demonstrate that people who challenged conventional identity and - in doing so, asked for equality - have always been part of Jersey’s history.”
