Bailiff Announces a Ukraine Appeal

Mar 01, 2022

The Bailiff’s Chambers in coordination with the Government of Jersey and Jersey Overseas Aid, has today launched an appeal to coordinate all charitable donations in support of Jersey’s response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The Bailiff’s Ukraine Appeal will accept donations from people in Jersey, enabling the Island to stand in solidarity with the civilian victims of Russian aggression. It will focus on supporting the Ukrainian people and will provide an opportunity for people and organisations who want and are able to contribute financially to support the people caught up in the conflict.

The Island’s official aid agency, Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), will ensure that the funds are directed to the agencies and locations where they will have the most impact. JOA will also ensure the funds are properly accounted for. Meanwhile, Jersey Side By Side, the charity established following the 2004 Tsunami, is gearing up to help process donations eligible for tax relief, meaning that £1 donated by a taxpayer can be worth £1.25 to the appeal. Donations can also be made by cheques payable to ‘The Bailiff’s Ukraine Appeal’.

Jersey’s Government fully supports all UK and UN sanctions deployed in response to Russia’s actions. In the coming days and weeks, the government expects further amendments to the UK Sanctions Regime.

The Bailiff, Mr Timothy Le Cocq, said: “Islanders are generous people and already we have seen a tremendous outpouring of support for the people of Ukraine.

‘The Russian invasion of a peaceful European country and its use of indiscriminate force against civilians has shocked Jersey, which knows only too well the impact of Occupation. Islanders are already doing what they can to help the people of Ukraine, and this Fund will help direct their generosity to those who need it most.”

“Deputy Carolyn Labey, Minister for International Development, said: “Jersey Overseas Aid is in close contact with the main humanitarian agencies operating in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, and will ensure that all money collected for Ukraine will be spent as effectively and efficiently as possible. Jersey will not stand silently by as this appalling tragedy unfolds.”
