Active Travel update

Oct 30, 2020

A plan to support Islanders wellbeing by encouraging more walking and cycling has been published.

‘The journey to becoming an active travel island’ looks at five overarching themes:

  • infrastructure
  • education
  • training and publicity
  • digital mobility;
  • policy initiatives and events.

Each theme explores a range of proposals which aim to make walking and cycling inclusive, safe and attractive for all Islanders. The schemes and initiatives are part of a move towards making walking and cycling a primary choice of transport and has been published as part of the Sustainable Transport Policy (STP).

Deputy Kevin Lewis, Minister for Infrastructure said; “Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic impaired the Government's ability to deliver the Sustainable Transport Strong Start Delivery Plan. On a positive note, the Island has seen record numbers of people choosing active travel, particularly cycling, since the pandemic started.

“This momentum is an opportunity to look at how we can have a transport system which works for everyone. The plan outlines how Islanders can have confidence to walk and cycle while contributing to their mental health and wellbeing. Ultimately, we are encouraging a shift in thinking when it comes to choosing transport so we can reduce our reliance on car travel.”
