Deputies Ward and Gardiner attend Sustainable Economic Development Workshop hosted by the CPA

Deputy Ward and Deputy Gardiner of the States Assembly recently attended the Sustainable Economic Development Workshop hosted by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Small Branches Network). A key focus of the event was on Climate Change where both Deputies learned about the unique challenges faced by other small states such as Jersey regarding this issue.

The conference aimed, in part, to educate Parliamentarians from small states across the Commonwealth on how they can help tackle this global issue.  As part of their visit to the conference, Deputy Ward and Deputy Gardiner both received the climate change toolkit, “A Guide for Effective Climate Change Action”. The toolkit outlines a range of approaches to tackle climate change, the results of the latest scientific research, and details of innovative and actionable steps for Parliamentarians from small jurisdictions.

The CPA pointed out that while climate change is a global concern its impact touches every nation on earth and that small states such as Jersey could suffer disproportionately from its effect.

Deputy Ward said, “It was a very important conference which demonstrated the common challenges shared by Jersey and other small states. We must play a part in driving the agenda on addressing climate change and take actions as needed.”

Deputy Ward and Deputy Gardiner also had the opportunity to hear from experts from international organisations such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Oxfam and the Small States Network for Economic Development whilst also learning from the experiences of their fellow peers.

The Jersey branch of CPA promotes parliamentary best practice and the values of the Commonwealth in the States Assembly. It also seeks to build relationships between Jersey and other Commonwealth jurisdictions, to raise awareness and understanding of Jersey across the Commonwealth. It achieves these aims by participating in CPA conferences, seminars and training programmes; by involving Members and staff of the States Assembly in parliamentary benchmarking and outreach work; and by hosting CPA events in Jersey.
