2022 Democracy Celebrations Launch

Aug 26, 2022

2022 Democracy celebrations launch with poetry competition and quiz

Today sees the launch of a family-friendly quiz and a poetry competition leading into Jersey’s third annual Democracy Week, which will take place from 26 – 30 September.

The Big Wander quiz encourages Islanders to explore Jersey by foot whilst learning more about its democratic system. There are 50 questions with answers to be found in all 12 Parishes. The quiz can be completed in stages over the next six weeks until it closes at midnight on Sunday 25 September.

Young Islanders can tag their school when they enter and the school(s) with the most entries and highest point score will be announced, and prizes awarded, on stage in the Royal Square, on Friday 30 September.

Following the success of last year’s Island Views photography competition, a poetry competition of the same name has also launched today. The competition asks Islanders aged 11 and over to capture what they hope Jersey will look like in four years’ time, at the end of the new States Assembly’s tenure. There are two categories, one for 11–18-year-olds and another for those aged 19 and over.

Entrants will have their work displayed in the Royal Square and will be given the opportunity to perform their poem in the Square as part of the Corn Riots Festival. The competition will be judged by a panel encompassing the Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore, and President of Scrutiny Liaison Committee, Deputy Sam Mézec. Winners will be announced at an event held in the Royal Square on Friday 30 September. First prize is a £100 Waterstones voucher, and the two runners-up will each receive a £50 Waterstones voucher.

To take part in The Big Wander, simply download the ‘Goosechase’ app and find The Big Wander by entering the code 5W456R or download a copy of the quiz questions from the States Assembly website and submit your answers via email to [email protected].

To take part in Island Views, entrants have until 5pm on Wednesday 14 September to email their poem to [email protected]. Poets should include their name and contact details and indicate if they are in the 11-18 or 19+ category. One poem written in any form can be submitted, but it must not exceed 40 lines.

Education Manager at the States Greffe, Molly Jehan, said: “The Big Wander is the perfect late-summer activity for families to get involved in and learn more about Jersey’s democratic system. We hope it will also encourage some healthy interschool competition as students return to school.

“If you prefer writing to exploring, Island Views is a chance for residents of all ages to channel their creativity and share their aspirations for Jersey in 2026 through poetry. We hope that many entrants will embrace the unique opportunity to read their poem aloud to their family and friends against the beautiful backdrop of the Royal Square.”
