Jersey Gas Site Consultation Opens

Feb 20, 2019

Islanders are being asked for their views on proposed amendments to the overall planning objectives for construction on the Jersey Gas site in Tunnell Street, St Helier.

A consultation has been launched into proposed changes to the 2013 development brief which would result in:

  • an extension to the Millennium Town Park of approximately 1.35 acres (5,463 m²)
  • approximately 110 new homes, including some affordable housing
  • underground parking (150 – 200 spaces), primarily for residents and shoppers.

Andium Homes Ltd was required to provide these three elements in a proposition adopted by the States in January 2018. Adapting the development brief (which sets out the overall planning objectives) will ensure that it is aligned with the States proposition (which sets out the specific proposals for the area).

The consultation, which has been published on gov.je/consultations, will ensure that the community around the site, and any other interested parties, are able to give their views on the new brief.

The Minister for the Environment, Deputy John Young, said: “The revised development brief will bring current planning guidance into line with the proposition adopted by the States last year, which sought to secure a significant extension to the Millennium Town Park. We all know that St Helier needs more publicly accessible open space, and this guidance will help to secure more than an acre of new parkland for islanders to enjoy.

“The new requirements will also secure the provision of affordable homes, and additional car parking for St Helier residents and shoppers – both of which are in high demand. I am keen to hear feedback from the local community about these additions, which I hope will bring about positive changes in the north of town.”

Anyone wishing to have their say can send their comments to Alistair Coates, Principal Planner, by emailing [email protected] or by writing to Department of Strategic Policy, Performance and Population, 19 – 21 Broad Street, St Helier, JE4 8ND.

The consultation will close on 2 April 2019.

The rest of the development brief will remain unchanged from the 2013 document.
