HEALTH AND SOCIAL SECURITY PANEL RESPONSE TO LABOUR MARKET SURVEY

Friday 28 April 13:47

Deputy Geoff Southern, as Vice Chairman of the Health and Social Security scrutiny panel today welcomed the figures on zero-hour contracts in the December Labour Market Survey. As full-time jobs rose by 1,000 over the last year in the private sector, the numbers on zero-hours remained largely static, which hopefully means more stability on the workforce.

“Even better news is to be found in the public sector where a reduction in headcount of over 600 posts included the loss of 250 zero-hour jobs,” says Deputy Southern. “The proportion of zero-hour employment in the public sector has fallen to just over 6% of the total. The use of zero-hours, often inappropriately, remains stubbornly high in comparison with the UK, at 11%.”

“The panel still waits for the Minister to act on the recommendations contained in its report on zero-hours contracts”.
