‘Bigger and Better’ Jersey Skills Show is Back

Wednesday 27 September 16:03

Jersey’s largest skills and careers event returns on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October at Fort Regent and will be even bigger this year. The Skills Show, organised by Skills Jersey and sponsored by Grant Thornton, is now in its third year and will feature more exhibitors and employers than ever before.

The Fort Regent’s Gloucester Hall will be filled with skills demonstrations, interactive stands and opportunities to meet experts from a range of Jersey industries. Qualified advisers from Skills Jersey will also be available to provide guidance on how to take the next step into work or further/higher education.

The Jersey Skills Show is free and opens to schools and parents from 10am to 5pm on Friday 13 October. It’s then open to the public, including students, graduates, career changers and job seekers from 10am to 2pm on Saturday 14 October

On Saturday anyone, regardless of age or stage in their career, will be able to try:

coding, gaming, virtual reality and digital animation in the new digital area.

veterinary science including listening to heartbeats and taking blood pressure.

window dressing techniques with some of the best stores in St Helier.

firearm training and arrest techniques with the States of Jersey police.

life in Accident & Emergency, pathology, physiotherapy, psychology and social services, if you are considering a medical or health career.

building a wall, painting and decorating, scaffolding, surveying and architecture, if you want to work in construction.

pancake tossing competitions and cake decorating activities for budding bakers.

music, performance arts, design, media production, animation and art.

Exhibitors from finance, business, childcare, sport, the armed forces and other business sectors will also be taking part.

Christine Walwyn, Education’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “The Jersey Skills Show is an excellent way of bringing together professionals, students and job seekers, including those looking for a career change. It provides a unique opportunity for students to appreciate the wide range of careers on offer and to speak directly to those who work in them. The growth in the diversity and numbers of participants shows that it is becoming an established and useful highlight in the careers calendar.”

Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said: "Skills are high on the agenda for us and this annual show will continue to be an important element of that work as we move forward with a new Skills Strategy for the Island. I am particularly grateful to the many employers who have rolled up their sleeves to work with our team on this unique event. The Jersey Skills Show has previously proved that its hands-on, interactive formula works. The expansion in the number of exhibitors is evidence of that.”

Adam Budworth, Managing Director Grant Thornton, said: “We are delighted to support the Jersey Skills Show. As a firm we are committed to unlocking the potential for growth, not just in our clients, but for our people and communities and ultimately to benefit the island.”
