JERSEY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY: A CONSTRUCTION TAX?

Members are advised that the 2017 JeCC Annual Debate will take place on Tuesday 5 December at the Radisson Hotel commencing at 7.30am.

Kindly sponsored by Benest & Syvret the debate will be focusing on the proposed introduction of a Jersey Infrastructure Levy (JIL). A contentious issue that is opposed by the Construction Industry as well as Chamber of Commerce and Jersey Farmers Union and has been taken to Scrutiny for their consideration before it is put to the States for debate on 12 December.

With recent reports indicating that the average price of a three-bedroom house has risen to £560,000. The introduction of this new levy could add a further cost of in the region of £13,000 to house prices and therefore will make making purchasing a home even more unaffordable.

The panel will consist of -

  • Deputy Steve Luce, Minister Department of Environment
  • Matthew Spry of Lichfields who assisted the Council in preparing their response to the consultation of the new Levy
  • Claire Smith, Ogier, who specialises in planning & environmental, property, construction, working pan-Channel Islands in the Local Legal Services team.
  • Cathy Elliot & Andrew Morris, Chamber of Commerce, Building & Development Committee
