The NEBOSH National General Certificate (NGC) in occupational safety and health is a nationally recognised qualification covering the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, a range of workplace hazards and methods of control.

Designed for:

Non-specialists in health and safety who require sound initial training leading to a basic recognised qualification through examination and assessment. These would include managers, supervisors and safety representatives.

Successful completion of the NEBOSH NGC will enable candidates with suitable experience to apply for Tech IOSH.

Course Structure & Key Topics:

The NEBOSH NGC consists of three units, each separately assessed. Delegates may choose to take units either all at the same time or separately. On successful completion of each unit, a unit certificate will be issued. However, to achieve the NEBOSH NGC Certificate award, delegates will need to pass each of the units within a five-year period.

The three units are:

NGC1 - Management of Health & Safety

§ Foundations of Health and Safety, Policy, Organising for health and safety, promoting a positive culture, risk assessment, principles of control, monitoring, review and audit, accident investigations

GC2 - Controlling Workplace Hazards

§ Movement of people and vehicles, manual and mechanical handling, work equipment, electrical safety, fire safety, chemical and biological hazards, physical and psychological hazards, construction activities

GC 3 - Practical Assessment

§ To satisfy the requirements for the award, delegates must pass the two written papers for NGC1 and GC2 plus the practical assessment GC 3. The practical assessment will be carried in the candidates own workplace.

Course Assessment:

To satisfy the requirements for the award, delegates must pass the two x 2 hour written papers for NGC1 and GC2 plus the practical assessment (unaided workplace inspection) GC 3. The course is verified by the National Examination Board of Safety and Health (NEBOSH)
